"I know what to do, I just need the time..."

What if that's not true? Personally, I don't think that's your problem. If you knew what to do, you'd be doing it by now. At home, at work, in your community, for your clients, your boss, your colleagues, your spouse, your kids...

If you knew, you would do.

Try this on for size:

"I have the time, I just need to know what to do..."

It's almost a new year, so why don't we shift things up a bit? I'll share the outline of a homework assignment I assign to EVERYONE I coach through The Academy. Ready?

Step 1: Open your notebook, and make a list of the 12-25 ROLES you need to step fully into over the next year.

Step 2: Pick 2, one personal and one professional.

Step 3: Make THREE lists for each one. Title each list with the following prompts:

As a ___________, if I had 6 minutes, I could:

1.
2.
3.
...

As a ___________, if I had 30 minutes, I could:

1.
2.
3.
...

As a ___________, if I had 60 minutes, I could:

1.
2.
3.
...

In the world you work and live in, it's easy to think you need "More Time." Often, I watch as people schedule an hour (or more!) on their calendar for this, or for that. Then, when I talk with them by video [I prefer 1:1 coaching sessions to be done via video], I hear them say they "just didn't have the time they needed."

So, instead of thinking TIME is your problem, I double-dog dare you to identify 10-30 things you could do as a ___________ (role) in 6 minutes, 30 minutes, and then 60 minutes. Over the course of a week, review that list of things you COULD do - not a list TO do - when you have the appropriate amount of time.

You Have Time

  • In line at a coffee shop? You'll have 6 minutes.
  • Someone cancel a meeting last minute? There's your 30 minutes.
  • Wake up early, or can't fall asleep? There's an hour right there!

When you're ready to transform HOW you work and focus on WHAT you get done, think action...not just time.
